Santa Barbara Health & Fitness Research Questions

During this study I will be looking at the Santa Barbara health and fitness culture. I will observe and interview 2 people with a strong influence on the community. They are Rachel and Kasey Camacho; a married couple who teach a variety of fitness classes and are personal trainers through the Santa Barbara Athletic Club. Even outside the athletic club, they are providing free workouts around town as well. They are very active on social media in promoting a healthy lifestyle, and they use the hashtag #SBFITT, and through this hashtag you can find all their social media posts and updates.

Through this study I will like to observe them in their teaching settings, and consider the following questions:

1.) How do they teach and what is it doing for the community to educate people in this way?

2.) How does immersing oneself in this culture help people to maintain their own healthy lifestyle?

3.) Through what mediums (social media, SBAC, etc.) do they spread living a healthy lifestyle and how are they effective?

  1. Aunt Alderson,

    Great start. Here are some of my thoughts that can -- keyword "can" (you don't need to change anything) -- help you think about other, maybe deeper, ways to think about these questions.

    1.) How do they teach and what is it doing for the community to educate people in this way?
    ~~~> What underlying philosophies drive their teaching? Why? Where'd they originate? Were they taught in a specific way(s)? Is their teaching an extenson of their outlook on health/fitness, and if so, how? What, exactly, are they hoping people will learn (i.e., take with them) back into their community(ies)?
    2.) How does immersing oneself in this culture help people to maintain their own healthy lifestyle?
    ~~~~> Who is “people” here? The club/gym-goers? Does varying degrees of immersion play a significant role in this, and if so, how? (And what IS “immersion”?) What seems to impact people’s ability to “stick with it” and consistently hit the gym? What are reasons for their inconsistencies and/or drop-outs? Are Rachel and/or Kasey aware of any of these issues? Does it impact their work in any way(s)? If so, how?

    3.) Through what mediums (social media, SBAC, etc.) do they spread living a healthy lifestyle and how are they effective?
    ~~~~> I don’t have too too many thoughts here at the moment. Maybe a who-does-what and why would be neat to consider—i.e., differences between Kasey and Rachel. It could also be useful to find out how these outreach efforts are received on the other end—what people are particularly drawn to and why.
    Z!
